Well, the Padres sure put on a show today. Over 20,000 fans went down to Petco Park for FanFest, and they were treated to an exhibition against Los Diablos Rojos. Ian Kennedy led an impressive pitching staff to a 2-hit shutout. Los Diablos didn't even pick up a hit until the fifth inning. Kennedy worked quick today. In his three innings of work, he allowed just one walk and struck out three. Seven other pitchers picked up the final six innings, giving up two hits and a walk. Their out pitches were working, too, racking up 6 Ks.

Meanwhile, A.J. Preller's new-look outfield was totally unfazed by their new home, going 5 for 9, scoring twice and picking up 4 RBI along the way. Justin Upton was the only Padre to pick up an extra base hit, with a 2 RBI double in the third. Matt Kemp and Wil Myers both knocked out a pair of singles, and Yonder Alonso joined them in the multi-hit club today. Everybody looked in fine shape for Monday's opener against the Dodgers.

On a strange side note, an old familiar face played for Los Diablos Rojos today. Former Padre Ruben Rivera started the game in right field. True to form, he went 0 for 2 and struck out once.

We'll see you back here at 1:10 PM Monday, when James Shields takes the mound against Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers. Baseball is back!

That's it, everybody. Spring training is finally over, and the Padres are heading home with one more Cactus League victory to their credit. Tyson Ross tossed three scoreless innings in his final start of the spring, holding the Brewers to two hits and a walk. And, well, we're used to that. Great pitching, no runs, it's an old story.

But today, and, hopefully, the rest of the season, the story was offense. Four different Friars went 2-for-3 today, scoring 4 runs and picking up 3 RBI. Three of those players were big acquisitions by A.J. Preller: Matt Kemp, Will Middlebrooks, and Derek Norris. The fourth was Yonder Alonso, who appears to have regained his form after an injury-plagued 2014. Alonso started the hit parade today with a triple in the first inning. Kemp and Norris joined the extra base club with doubles of their own, and Middlebrooks showed off with a pair of doubles. All of that added up to 6 runs for the good guys. The Brewers made an admirable effort to stay in the game, hammering Jason Lane for 4 runs and scoring a fifth off Frank Garces, but the good guys won out today.

There's one last exhibition left before Opening Day. Following FanFest, Ian Kennedy takes the mound against Los Diablos Rojos de Mexico. First pitch is at 2:00 PM, and if you can't be there in person, you can watch on Fox Sports San Diego or listen on 1090 AM.

Is there any reason to keep playing these spring training games? After today's 8-2 beatdown of the White Sox, it just seems like the Padres are ready to play games that count. James Shields was in fine form for his final start before Opening Day, throwing three scoreless innings and picking up a pair of strikeouts in the process. He didn't even need to be so on point, as he had considerable backup from his offense. The bats went 10 for 35 with a pair of homers and 4 walks.

Most of the scoring came early. In the first inning, Cameron Maybin and Yangervis Solarte hit a pair of singles to put a runner in scoring position with one out. Carlos Quentin followed with yet another single to plate Maybin and put the Padres on top. Venable kept the hit parade going, scoring Solarte and sending Quentin to third. Then Jedd Gyorko, whose bat has only just recently woken up, took Jeff Samardzija deep to left field.

After the early offensive outburst, both teams were quiet until the fifth inning. Yonder Alonso drew a two out walk off David Robertson, setting up Solarte for his second of three hits this afternoon, a bomb to center field. Chicago drew blood of their own in the bottom half of the inning, with a double and a single off Zack Segovia.

The Friars got that run right back, with Venable and Gyorko walking to start the sixth. A ground out advanced Venable to third, and a single by Clint Barmes plated the eighth and final Padres run of the afternoon. The White Sox got one more, hitting another double-single combo off Dale Thayer in the eighth.

The Padres have one more game in Peoria tomorrow, when Tyson Ross takes on the Brewers. First pitch is at 12:05 PM, and you can listen on MLB.com.

Following another solid win, the Padres are back home tonight to host the Royals at Peoria Sports Complex.

Ian Kennedy dominated in his final Spring outing yesterday, throwing six innings of shutout ball, allowing six hits and a walk while striking out seven.

Tonight Brandon Morrow gets the ball against Kansas City. He'll be making his first appearance for the Padres since aggravating a blister on his throwing hand on March 21st. Morrow is still trying to make his case for the team's fifth starting job, with his biggest contender being Odrisamer Despaigne. However many believe Morrow to have the slight edge over Despaigne.

Going for the Royals will be righty Jeremy Guthrie, who's also expected to be his club's fifth starter going into the season. Guthrie has pitched 7 2/3 innings this Spring, allowing three earned runs on six hits and no walks while striking out three batters.

At this point it's routine. Ian Kennedy put in his six scoreless innings, and there was plenty of hitting and scoring in the form of home runs.

The number four starter spot at this point is locked in for Ian Kennedy. This spring training he hasn't been putting up big headlining numbers, but instead has been using this time to specifically develop his pitches. Today his offspeed-heavy performance allowed him to go the six-inning distance that James Shields, Tyson Ross, and Andrew Cashner have all pulled off.

Kennedy's day saw seven strikeouts and only six damage-less hits, and the guy is throwing a lot of strikes.

Meanwhile, a middle-of-the-game offensive burst kept the Padres up and above while coasting off dominate pitching. Matt Kemp (went 1-for-2), Clint Barmes (went 1-for-2), and Yangervis Solarte (went 1-for-3) popped off some home runs. Six runs on eight hits to overpower the Reds. A classic Padres strategy.

As things wind down in the Cactus League, Kemp's spring has done nothing but help fuel the hype of Preller's outfield. As of today, he's hitting .375 with his fourth home run being a two-run shot into left-center field.

Hasta la vista. Kemp crushes this no-doubter to a lucky fan sporting the brown and gold.

Barmes' had his first HR in this closing week of spring training. Clint has leveled out at a .242 average, while Solarte's 3-run home run today has him sitting on a .283 average. His first home run of the season; Yangervis has 15 hits in a little over 50 at-bats in his competition for the third base spot, while Barmes' 8-33 spring training will be a tough sell against the feisty Alexi Amarista.

Solarte digs in deep, bends at the knees, and launches this stupid little baseball into the empty stands for some fortunate "dude"-looking guy on his cellphone.

The Padres' next game will see Brandon Morrow show his stuff in the scheme of a powerful starting rotation. Basically, he'll be expected to throw six scoreless innings. I'm predicting 2-to-3 home runs, as well.

This will be Kennedy's last appearance before the regular season, when he's expected to take up the 4th starting spot in the rotation. His most recent Cactus League start was ten days ago, on March 20th. He gave up just one run, unearned, in four innings of work against the Royals. This afternoon they plan on sending most of their starters out to face Kennedy and the Padres. They'll give the ball to Anthony Desclafani, who was nails in his most recent appearance. He threw six shutout frames against the Rangers last Wednesday and racked up nine strikeouts along the way.

Cashner had a good outing, even comparison to Ross' 12-K start yesterday. Myers, Gyorko and Kemp all popped off on some Seattle batting practice.

To kick off the last week of spring training, the Padres set Cashner on the mound. With James Shields already announced as the opening day starter, this puts Tyson Ross and Cash at projected 2 and 3 spots, respectively. To both work on and strut his stuff today, Cashner only allowed a lone run and four hits over six and a half innings. He also struck out six poor souls.

On the offensive side of things, the swingin' Friars collected 14 hits for 8 runs. The scoring was spread between Wil Myers, Matt Kemp, Jedd Gyorko, and Derek Norris, with some late inning action from Tommy Medica and Cory Spangenberg to put the cap on the day. Both Myers and Kemp went yard.

Working the mound

Cashner's last start was what could be described as a little bit poopy. He threw against the Mariners last Tuesday and gave up a home run to enemy Seth Smith, for a total of 4 hits, 3 runs, and 2 walks. He had Preller's new outfield to save him last time, and even if he threw as poorly as he did last time; had that same luxury this time as well.

Cashner inciting the inning-ending double play. In 18 innings pitched thus far, Cash has only given up 5 hits while striking out 14.

Instead, Cash went three straight innings without allowing any Seattle cleats to touch the plate. In the second inning, he struck out the side in 13 pitches, two of them with some signature 97 MPH heat. As he entered the 4th inning, he gave up a first-pitch HR to outfield prospect Jabari Henry. He stayed in until the middle of the 7th without giving up more than a lone double.

Action in the box

Yep. There were more home runs today. This time some more from Wil Myers who only needed the first pitch to decide he wanted to clock one out of left field. Same inning, next at bat, was Matt Kemp who took his into deep center. Jedd Gyorko and Derek Norris popped off some RBI singles, Gyorko in the 1st and 3rd. Kemp and Tommy Medica had some sac-grounders to knock in a pair of runs. Finally, Spangy topped things off with his own RBI single.

Kemp smash. Watch those "old man hips" turn.

FOUR more spring training games left, and EIGHT more days until opening day. Are you even ready?
