My notes from the January 14th Ron Fowler interview. The bullets:

Ron Fowler interview with Scott and BR (MP3)

Scott Kaplan asks Fowler if the All-Star Game was awarded to San Diego because the Padres named a plaza in Petco Park after Bud Selig.

"It had nothing to do with that. Frankly if we would have thought about it a bit more we would have done something inside the offices versus the outside because we realized the community did not understand the significance of some of the things the commissioner did, but there was no quid pro quo."

The Padres submitted a very compelling bid to the commissioners office. There's a lot of things going on in the summer. They had to work with the Convention Center and the Mayor's Office. There were eight or nine different efforts part of the bid. It was a private/public partnership that worked effectively for San Diego.

If the Mayor asked Fowler to help find a solution for the Chargers stadium, he would even if there might be a conflict of interest. "We need to keep the Chargers here."

A formal presentation for the 2016 All-Star Game was done in November. Major League Baseball came to town during the Winter Meetings and scouted the area. The commissioner said the Padres submitted the best bid. "We're just pleased as heck that we were awarded it."

Fowler thinks that the Padres would have gotten the All-Star game even without the buzz created around the Padres off-season acquisitions, but it didn't hurt. The Winter Meetings were a smashing success, which played a part. Fowler wants two or three more here. The ballpark improvements also contributed. Mike Dee, Ron Fowler and Peter Seidler are working really closely with the MLB on various projects and various committees as well.

Kaplan asks if this will be the year that Padres fans outnumber Dodger fans in Petco Park. "We would love to have the darker blue color on the caps of the fans that come to the games." The Padres are looking to reengage fans, along with Preller's improvements.

Major League Baseball appreciates the business perspective the team brings to baseball.

Being Chairman of the Padres is a dream come true.

Fowler won't bet against A.J. Preller getting a couple more things done before Spring Training.

Petco Park is going to host the 2016 All-Star Game. And it's all thanks to the hard work the Padres front office did to submit a worthy bid.

Okay... and MAYBE naming something after Bud Selig MIGHT have helped. We all know the reasons Selig Hall of Fame Plaza was a bad idea. But maybe JUST MAYBE, in hindsight, there was a bright side to the whole ordeal.

This is me trying to be as positive as I can about a crappy situation, so bear with me... I can't be the only one who remembers that, not too long ago, one of the biggest criticisms of the Padres front office was that they hadn't done enough to get us an All-Star Game. One of the most constant complaints from Padres fans in recent years was that Petco Park had yet to host an All-Star Game despite being "due." Before Selig Plaza happened, the soonest San Diego was even remotely supposed to be in the running for was 2019. And sure, that would have been an ideal time to host the Game with it being the Padres' 50th Anniversary and the obvious significance of the number 19; but now we get an All-Star Game three years earlier than we could've imagined.

The whole "BS Plaza" fiasco was a nightmare for San Diego, but think about what the All Star Game will do for all of us. And if naming a small, virtually insignificant area of Petco Park after Bud Selig helped seal the deal, isn't that KIND OF worth it? Even a little? And it was a good lesson for our front office on the importance of anticipating the reaction of the fanbase when making decisions.

Okay, I can't even sell that lie to myself.

But hopefully a year from now when we're still reeling from the excitement of our first World Series win and looking forward to hosting some of the best in baseball during the All-Star Break, BS Plaza can be a blip on the radar. Thanks to AJ Preller, we have a much-improved on-the-field product to look forward to and a new era of Padres baseball is being ushered in; and an All-Star Game coming to our town next year is just the oreo cookie bits on top of the sundae.

Petco Park finally gets its All-Star Game... but at what cost?

I am really excited for 2016's All-Star Game. The last time the Midsummer Classic was in town, I was seven years old, so even if we could have afforded it, I wouldn't have really appreciated it. And Petco Park is one of the most beautiful ballparks in baseball, in the single most gorgeous city in baseball. Everything about this decision is perfect... except for one little question that keeps popping up in the the back of my mind: Did the Padres sell their soul for this?

Back in August, <strike>well-loved</strike> reviled Commissioner Bud Selig came through town on his farewell tour. You might remember that the front office chose to honor him for his long years of commissioning by naming part of the ballpark after him, which upset more than a few fans. And then, in a move that doesn't look conspicuous at all, the team submitted their application for the All-Star Game. To the lame-duck commissioner they had just honored.

Officially, everyone will say that the two events are totally unrelated. And maybe that's true. But even if it is, it still doesn't look true, and there's no way to talk about the 2016 All-Star Game without talking about BS Plaza. The very fact that San Diego is getting a game expected to go to an <strike>American</strike> Arena League city is suspect. And it happened in the closing days of Selig's reign. It looks dirty as sin, and there's no good reason for it.

A game would have come to San Diego sooner rather than later, regardless. 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the Padres' major league debut as well as the 250th birthday of the city (right around All-Star Weekend, no less), and '19 is of pretty obvious significance to the team and its fans. That's the kind of history MLB thrives on, and it could have happened all without selling out to the doddering old fool who turned the All-Star Game into a joke.

Man, I should be really more excited but I still feel a bit dirty because of the whole Bud Selig bribe that brought us the All-Star game. I'm also already thinking about how I'm not going to be able to get tickets. Not to mention the home run derby is going to be tough to watch as well with the increased levels of gravity on the field.

Enough of my pessimism though! It'll be good for the city. I'll keep reminding myself of that every time I see Mike Dee grin at the TV cameras.

Anyway the news broke this morning, the Padres will host the All-Star game for the third time and for the first time since 1992. It's long overdue, mostly because Selig wouldn't give it to us after the city built a new ballpark in 2004 in his honor. Huzzah!

Returning to the Bud Selig Plaza thing for a moment, can the Padres officially hang the plaque commemorating the Bud Selig Hall of Fame Plaza ? I mean the transaction is complete now. Or did they chicken out after the immense outrage by Padres fans? Personally I want it hung. I want that plaque there forever to remind Padres leadership how badly they screwed up. I want them to look at that scar on our ballpark and think twice before they knowingly make a side deal that embarrasses the city.

Rob Neyer has a quick post about how commissioner Bud Selig plays favorites when it comes to awarding All-Star Games. He points to this as the reason the Orioles haven't hosted an All-Star Game since 1993. An All-Star Game hasn't been played in San Diego since 1992 and they built a new ballpark 10 years ago. Does Bud Selig play favorites? He sure as hell does. I think he also holds grudges since Selig was "booed lustily" during Petco Park's opening.

It looks like it worked too. It's shameful and embarrassing.
In case all these trades and signings weren't enough cause for joy amongst San Diego fans, we may also be finally getting that All Star Game we've been dreaming of.

The expected year for the All Star Game in San Diego would be 2016, which is sooner than anyone might have hoped, and a bit unexpected. Baltimore had been thought to be the chosen destination for the '16 Midsummer Classic, with our Petco Park seemingly the favorite for '17. People also thought 2019 might be an ideal year for San Diego to host the Game, with it being the 50th anniversary of the Padres entering the Major Leagues and with the number 19 carrying an obvious significance for San Diego and Padres fans. But several sources have come out to say that SD will in fact host in 2016.

If that is the case, two NL teams would host back-to-back Games (Cincinnati is scheduled to host in 2015), which would be a break from tradition, though not the first time it has happened. Most recently, the NL hosted two years in a row from 2006 to 2007.

The Padres have been actively pursuing an All Star Game at Petco Park for at least a couple of years now. In early 2013, Corey Brock reported that Executive Chairman Ron Fowler and then-Padres-President/CEO & GLB Mentor Tom Garfinkel had expressed his desire to Major League Baseball and the front office was preparing a proposal and presentation for the commissioner to campaign for SD to host their first All Star Game since 1992 at Jack Murphy Stadium. Garfinkel had made it a priority of his to get the Game to Petco Park, but unfortunately he "resigned" before his hard work bore fruit.

Then during the 2014 season, new Padres President Mike Dee announced a section of Petco Park to be named after the outgoing commissioner, Bud Selig, citing Selig's alleged contributions to keeping baseball in San Diego several years ago. A few months later, they submitted their official application to host the All Star Game with their eyes supposedly set on 2019 in San Diego. Many saw the act of putting Selig's name on a part of the stadium as a ploy/bribe to get an All Star Game to our city, and we may or may not be seeing the results of that with this recent revelation.

To put even more stock into these reports, San Diego City officials announced just this week that they've approved a proposal for city funds to be used to cover police and fire department costs, city permits, and operational services. The measure will allow up to $1.5 million to be allocated towards the event. Approval for the proposal came about thanks in large part to revenue that the All Star Game, and surrounding activities, would bring to the city.

Major League Baseball officials say it would bring in about $80 million to the city of San Diego. Also, officials with the San Diego Tourism Authority say it would draw more than $1 million in sales tax and $1.2 million in hotel taxes.

Selig is expected to make the official announcement next month prior to his retirement, but all signs are pointing to a much-anticipated Midsummer Classic in San Diego in 2016.

Today at FanFest the Padres' ownership representatives spoke and answered questions. Chairman Ron Fowler, Peter Seidler and President Mike Dee were on stage with Dick Enberg, who was acting as a master of ceremonies.

During the Q&A segment a fan asked if the Padres were any closer to bringing an All-Star game to San Diego.
