Last year, the Padres staged a two-day series of scrimmages featuring some of their brightest young prospects against a team of prospects from the Rangers system at Petco Park. The dedicated fans who came out got to see exciting players like Cal Quantrill, Josh Naylor, Luis Urias, and Tirso Ornelas play on the biggest stage of their young careers. A private affair was held on Friday which coincided with a #SocialSummit (that was attended by our very own Tim Arzaga aka @SDHatGuy) and a public game was held on Saturday. Well, they’re doing it again this weekend!
On the schedule for Friday, September 29th is a doubleheader of seven-inning contests. The first game is scheduled to start at 12:00pm and will coincide with another #SocialSummit (@Jodes and I are confirmed to attend) where a meet-and-greet will probably feature some kind of presentation to give a glimpse of upcoming changes within the organization and around the ballpark. A little birdie told me that LHP Dan Dallas will start the first game on today’s slate. A second game is scheduled for 3:00pm, which is open to Padres members (aka season ticket holders), after which a Town Hall meeting is scheduled for 5:00pm, again for the members.
On Saturday, September 30th, a third and final game is scheduled, and this one’s open to the public. If you’d like to attend Saturday’s Padres On Deck game, tickets are free and are available through the team’s website. After attending last year’s game, I’d like to strongly encourage you all to attend. It felt like an intimate affair with the most ardent of Padres fans, and the general admission seating guaranteed that you’d find a great spot to watch some talented kids put on a show!
The players we can expect to see in this weekend’s scrimmages are coming from the Instructional League which recently wrapped up in Peoria (you want to click those links and read if you’re going to one of these games!). You might have heard of some of them: McKenzie Gore, Adrian Morejon, Michel Baez, Pedro Avila, Jacob Nix, Jorge Ona, Buddy Reed, Fernando Tatis, Jr., Hudson Potts, Ruddy Giron, and plenty more. This event is guaranteed to be a good time, so come out and support the future!
