The starting lineups for Game 3 have been announced and Joe Musgrove looks to keep his postseason success for the Padres.

The San Diego Padres have won each of his two Playoff starts this postseason.

In New York, it was all about Musgrove's ears and spin rate as he dominated the Mets lineup. In a close-out game against the Dodgers, it was all about the Padres offense in 7th inning making it rain no pun intended with 5 runs coming across.

This will have to be one of those “regular season doesn’t matter” games as Musgrove allowed 6 runs in six innings in his lone matchup against the Phillies. I am extremely confident when I say I doubt that happens again.

The former Giants and Padres manager is back to coaching and he is not having a reunion in San Diego as they are set with Bob Melvin this time.

After Bruce Bochy’s final years in San Francisco, many tried to align the dots for the three-time world series champion manager to come back to the San Diego Padres.

Obviously, the Padres are in a much better spot playing in the NLCS under current managers Bob Melvin. San Diego is no longer under the charge of the Andy Green and Jayce Tinglers of the world. Coincidently they haven’t reached this stage of the playoffs since Bruce Bochy was at the helm.

It was announced Friday morning that the former NL West manager Bochy will join the Texas Rangers as the new manager.

A bit of a surprising move because the expectation was if Bochy would manage again it would be for a ballclub that was filled with talent and ready to compete for a World Series. That’s why a lot predicted a return to the Padres before the Melvin hiring.

Game one NLCS starting lineups between Philadelphia Phillies and San Diego Padres. Starter Yu Darvish looks to maintain his success this season over the Phillies.

Starting pitcher Yu Darvish has thrown thirteen innings vs the Philadelphia Phillies and has allowed only three runs across those innings. Including seven shutout innings in Philadelphia.

If you haven’t noticed the playoffs are certainly a different beast (LA knows that all too well). Yet, it is encouraging knowing your game-one starter has posted a 2.08 ERA in two starts vs Philadelphia.

The Padres went 1-1 in those starts. But, in the loss – Nabil Crismatt and Ray Kerr allowed four combined runs blowing a would-be second win against the Phillies for Darvish. Also, it should be noted those two bullpen arms are not active for this series.

General manager A.J. Preller brought in Darvish last season to avoid the starting pitching collapse that happened in 2020.

Darvish has more than delivered on that this season – a 2-0 playoff record and a 3.00 ERA have allowed the opportunity for the Padres to beat both 100-win ball clubs on the road in New York and Los Angeles. This NLCS start will be Darvish’s first start at home enjoying the atmosphere of the friar faithful as opposed to dealing with the tough Mets and Dodgers fans.

The Padres advance to the NLCS for the first time in twenty four years after eliminating the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Did the dragon get slayed?
For the first time in Padres franchise history, they’ll host the Dodgers in the Playoffs at home in front of their fans.

The San Diego Padres took care of business the way they needed to as they come back to Petco Park. The game-two win in Los Angeles gave the Padres home-field advantage. How is that? If this series were to go the distance and play all five — two games remain in San Diego and just one in Los Angeles. Games three will be one for the San Diego Padres history books.

For the first time in franchise history, the Padres will host a home game vs the Dodgers at their home stadium with fans allowed in attendance. If you remember 2020 the Padres vs Dodgers NLDS took place at a neutral stadium in Texas.

Postseason games in the home and away stadiums are what makes this time of year so special. It’s the reason why Padres fans will spend over $200 per ticket to sit in the 300-section plus all the beer and food that will come along with it.

A previous Dodgers-Padres matchup this season set a Petco Park record of 44,930 fans in attendance. I will be shocked if that number isn’t surpassed this Friday.

Splitting the two games in Los Angeles will allow the Padres an opportunity to clinch a birth to the NLCS here in San Diego to play Philadelphia or Atlanta. To do so, the Padres must win the next two games.

The Dodgers coming up short in the postseason during a NORMAL 162-game season during their 11 year run seems to be the standard. Oh how nice would it be to keep that trend going, eliminating them in San Diego.

Game three is tonight October 14th at 5:37 PM. A quality start from Blake Snell can be pivotal the way the relievers and run support have been producing.

The San Diego Padres 2022 season will be on the line tonight and it’ll up be to San Diego’s own to advance to Los Angeles.

The San Diego Padres are set to take on the Mets in New York for game three of the NLWC series. Starting for the Padres will be a local childhood fan of the team Joe Musgrove. For Padres fans it has to be a special feeling having a guy on the mound that wants this win just as much as the fans if not more.

The Padres have not won a Playoff series with fans being allowed in attendance since 1998. If you were born in 1999 you can legally go anywhere in the Gaslamp and buy a beer. That’s how long the drought has been since 1998. Just in case you forgot the 2020 series win vs St. Louis no fans were allowed at Petco Park.

Why is that relevant? Musgrove was only five years old at the time. He lived through the drought as a Padres fan throughout his childhood and teen years. As someone who shared a locker room at middle school during PE and high school during our time on the Grossmont football team. I remember the conversations about the Padres showing hope and then coming short like their last 90-win season in 2010 when they missed the postseason entirely.

In Musgrove’s last six starts vs playoff teams, the Padres are 0-6, including a loss to the Mets. The great thing about the playoffs is all that erases. You only need just one win tonight, not all of the six back.

With the LHH vs RHP matchup, you hope Grisham can run into something vs Max Scherzer, a guy he faced before in the Playoffs during his infamous wild card game with Milwaukee vs Washington in 2019.

Five shutout innings by Blake Snell and 10th inning patience by Jorge Alfaro help the Padres walk off the Dodgers at Petco Park.

In the final stretches of a potential playoff birth, Jorge Alfaro does it again for the San Diego Padres. But, this time – it didn’t take a swing of the bat.

Padres found themselves in extra innings after allowing the Dodgers to tie the game in the sixth and the ninth. Unfortunately in that ninth inning Josh Hader’s six-game no-run streak came to an end.

Before knowing he’d become the hero for the fifth time this season – Alfaro dropped a high fastball by Hader resulting in a passed ball and the tying run for Los Angeles. The error was credited to Alfaro – while it was high, that was a pitch he catches 10/10. Hader has enough earned runs on the season so fortunately for him the Padres won and it didn’t cost him an earned run extending his no “earned” runs streak to seven.

After committing the error of sending this game to extras, Alfaro had his opportunity to make it up, and he did – thanks to former friar Craig Kimbrel. After swinging and missing on a high fastball that could’ve been hit for some damage, Kimbrel made it easy with two fastballs that weren’t even close outside of the plate. Alfaro was able to watch those with ease as if it was a Netflix series.

Blake Snell anyone? The Padres were in a position to win primarily to the starting pitching of Snell. The former Cy Young went five innings, one hit allowed, and no earned runs.

Tuesday’s outing marked the fifth time Snell did not allow a run in a start and three of those came this month. Snell had only one bad outing this month, coincidently it was a home game against the Dodgers. You love to see a pitcher make the adjustment and completely dominate them the next go around.

Those kinds of adjustments are what San Diego will need in the playoffs.
