After eight years in Atlanta, Klesko was traded to the Padres following the 1999 season. The Padres acquired Ryan Klesko, Bret Boone, and minor league pitcher Jason Shiell from the Braves for Quilvio Veras, Reggie Sanders, and Wally Joyner. Klesko made his lone All-Star appearance of his career in 2001, batting .286 with 30 home runs. Klesko would stay in San Diego until 2006 after undergoing shoulder surgery. He retired in 2007 following a season with the San Francisco Giants.
