Future Hall-of-Fame pitcher Gaylord Perry allows four hits and a walk with five strikeouts in seven innings to get his 20th win of the season as the Padres score a 5–1 win over the Giants at San Diego Stadium. Perry joins Randy Jones as the only Padres pitchers to win 20 games in a season. Perry would go on to win 20 or more games four times in his career, and 1978 was the final time he would reach the feat at age 39.
