Left fielder Greg Vaughn goes 3-for-5 with two homers, three RBIs and three runs scored as the Padres defeat the New York Mets 9–8 at Qualcomm Stadium. Future Hall-of-Famer Trevor Hoffman works a scoreless inning to get his 45th save, breaking the Padres’ single-season record of 44 set by Mark Davis in 1989. Hoffman would go on to save a career-high 53 saves in ‘98.
