Third baseman Graig Nettles homers in his first at-bat giving him home runs in three straight at-bats to tie a Padres record in an 8–4 Padres loss to Montreal at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. The team would clinch its first division title later that year and advance to the first World Series in franchise history.
