San Diego Padres vs. Cincinnati Reds series preview

The San Diego Padres had one of the best home stands imaginable the last week and a half. They went 9-1, including two series sweeps in a row of the Reds and the Los Angeles Dodgers before taking two out of three versus the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Now after an off day, the Friars head to the city of Cincinnati for a rematch against the same Reds they just swept out of town a couple weekends ago. The Reds dropped to .500 on Sunday after losing to the Atlanta Braves by a score of 4-0.

Tuesday, June 29 (4:10 pm PT): Blake Snell (SD) vs Tony Santillan (CIN)

Blake Snell was absolutely tremendous in his last start against the Dodgers, going five innings without allowing an earned run. He essentially replicated his Game 6 World Series performance, so if he can replicate that to some degree the rest of the season, it's safe to say he will have earned his paycheck.

Tony Santillan wasn't terrible against the Padres in San Diego but he wasn't great either. The rookie gave up three runs in three innings with three strikeouts. In his last start, he only allowed one run against Atlanta in six innings of work.

Wednesday, June 30 (4:10 pm PT): Joe Musgrove (SD) vs Vladimir Gutierrez (CIN)

Musgrove had a start against the Dodgers in his last time out that he probably dreamed about when he was a kid. The El Cajon native allowed just one run in six strong innings in route to a 5-3 series finale win over their rivals. Musgrove has been the team's most consistent starter not named Yu Darvish and he would be heading to Colorado for the All-Star Game if I had a vote.

Vladimir Gutierrez owns a 3.97 ERA entering Wednesday, which was bumped up after he allowed five runs against the Padres at Petco Park. It took him 102 pitches just to get through five innings so that should tell the Padres offense he isn't the most consistent pitcher in the world.

Thursday, July 1 (4:10 pm PT): Chris Paddack (SD) vs Luis Castillo (CIN)

Jayce Tingler hasn't officially named Paddack the starter but his turn in the rotation comes after Musgrove. Paddack wasn't his sharpest in his last start against Arizona on Friday, allowing five runs in less than three innings of work. He admitted after the game he got into trouble when he allowed himself to think to much on the mound, so I wouldn't expect him to make the bullpen have as long as a night that they did last Friday night.

Luis Castillo has been much better than how he started the 2021 season and he surrendered two runs against the Padres earlier this season. He was even better against Atlanta in his most recent outing, allowing no runs and six hits in seven innings of work. The Reds are hoping to see that same guy in the series finale on Thursday.
