Arizona Diamondbacks vs. San Diego Padres series preview

Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports

The San Diego Padres are coming off of two series sweeps in a row, capped off with a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Petco Park crowd has been electric ever since the capacity was allowed to be back to normal. After the off day on Thursday, the Padres will get a much easier matchup compared to Los Angeles in the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Diamondbacks were expected to be a rebuilding team this year but they weren't expected to lose virtually every game they play. Arizona has lost 19 out of their last 20 games and recently lost 17 games in a row. It's hard to lose 17 games in a row even if you're not trying to win.

San Diego needs to win this series and frankly should sweep the series because these are games that great teams like the Padres have to take advantage of by padding their win total. The Padres went 9-0 on a home stand earlier this season so if they sweep the Diamondbacks, then that would set a franchise record for the best home stand in the franchise's history.

Friday, June 25 (7:10 pm PT): Corbin Martin (ARI) vs. Chris Paddack (SD)

TV: Bally Sports San Diego, Radio: 97.3 The Fan

Corbin Martin is an unknown to the much of the baseball world and a reason why is because he isn't a good pitcher right now. He has briefly pitched for Arizona this year, posting a 8.62 ERA with 13 strikeouts in 15.2 innings of work.

Chris Paddack, on the other hand, is a known pitcher in the baseball world and has been getting more praise as of late (and deservedly so) because of his resurgence as a solid starting pitcher. Despite having a losing record in 2021, Paddack hasn't allowed more than three runs in a start since the end of May against the Cubs. After back-to-back quality starts to kick off June, Paddack allowed two runs and struck out a season-high 11 batters in his last start against the Cincinnati Reds.

Saturday, June 26 (7:10 pm PT): Merrill Kelly (ARI) vs. Dinelson Lamet (SD)

TV: Bally Sports San Diego, Radio: 97.3 The Fan

It seems like the Padres face Kelly every time the Diamondbacks match up with them and it won't change this time around. Kelly hasn't had great history against the Padres, as Victor Caratini, Trent Grisham, Eric Hosmer, and Fernando Tatis Jr. all are hitting over .300 against the right hander. It hasn't gotten better this season against any opponents he's faced, as Kelly owns a 5.06 ERA with less than 80 strikeouts on the year.

Dinelson Lamet is now stretched out as a starter, which might have been a contributing factor as to why the Padres sent Ryan Weathers down to the Minors to keep building up starter-type innings. Lamet has eight starts this season but only a few of them recently have been real starts where he is freely letting it go and throwing 80-100 pitches. No Diamondback batter excluding David Peralta has hit a home run off Lamet in their careers. Ketel Marte is hitting .167 in 12 at-bats against the 28-year-old.

Sunday, June 27 (1:10 pm PT): Zac Gallen (ARI) vs. Yu Darvish (SD)

TV: Bally Sports San Diego, Radio: 97.3 The Fan

This will easily be the best pitching matchup of the weekend. Zac Gallen looks like he will be a pitcher the Diamondbacks will try to build around down the road and he has a 3.67 ERA with a 1.165 WHIP in 2021. Gallen seems to have a great start every other time out. Dating back to May 1, he allowed four runs before allowing just one run in his next start. Then, he allowed four runs again in 2.2 innings on June 17 before giving up one run in his last start on June 22.

Yu Darvish arguably had his signature Padres moment in his last start against the rival Dodgers. He went six strong innings and allowed just one run on a Mookie Betts home run with 11 strikeouts and one walk. Whenever Darvish takes the mound, it's "win day" in all but two starts this season and that shouldn't change on Sunday afternoon at Petco Park.
