Austin Nola had himself a night as he drove in a career-high six runs while leading an offensive explosion against St. Louis on Saturday night en route to a 13-3 walloping of the Cardinals in Petco Park. The Padres also recorded a a home run in each of the first three innings thanks to Tommy Pham, Ha-Seong Kim, and Nola, respectively.
Behind Nola, Pham and Manny Machado each drove in a pair of runs while Kim, Bryan O’Grady, and Patrick Kivelhan rounded out the days scoring with one apiece.
After San Diego put up six runs through the first three innings, the Cardinals responded with a pair homers of their own to bring the score to 6-2. However, that momentum didn’t last all that long as the Padres popped off for another four runs in the sixth.
The Cardinals managed another home run in the following inning but that was immediately met with three more San Diego runs on the other side of the sevent which effectively put this one way out of reach.
Starter Chris Paddack worked four innings and finished with just a pair of strikeouts to go with one walk, three hits allowed, and one run given up. Miguel Diaz followed with a team-leading three K’s in two innings while earning the win on the night, as well.
The Cards only struck out two batters total with both coming from starter Adam Wainwright. He worked four innings and gave up eight hits and six total runs.
Game three is set for 4:00 p.m. this afternoon. Ryan Weathers (2-1, 0.81 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound against Kwang Hyun Kim (1-0, 2.74 ERA).
