Minnesota Twins hire former Padres manager Jayce Tingler as bench coach

Tingler isn’t coming back to the Padres after all...

A.J. Preller hired Jayce Tingler before the 2020 season but we saw how that worked out. Now the Padres have hired what looks like the right man in Bob Melvin. Tingler, after getting fired, had the option of returning to the Padres organization just in a different role.

Preller said after relieving Tingler of his duties that his friend was taking some time to decided whether or not he was going to come back to the organization. That decision has been made: he won’t be returning.

Tingler surprisingly has already found another job as the bench coach of the Minnesota Twins. Rocco Baldelli has been the skipper in Minnesota for the last three seasons and was filling the bench coach vacancy after Mike Bell unexpectedly passed away earlier this year.

Tingler doesn’t seem like the typical bench coach, as he wasn’t the best in game decision maker while in San Diego’s dugout. But if the Twins value his two years of experience and think he can be more of assistance than a more veteran coach, then good for them.

Tingler’s record was 116-106 with the Padres.
