Lefferts joined the Padres in 1984 after spending his rookie year with the Chicago Cubs and was part of the 1984 NL Championship team. Lefferts stayed in San Diego until 1987 when he joined the San Francisco Giants in a midseason trade. Then, in 1990, Lefferts re-signed with the Padres and spent three more seasons in San Diego before being traded in late August 1992 to the Baltimore Orioles. Lefferts would then play two more seasons, one with the Texas Rangers and one with the California Angels before retiring following the 1994 strike.
