Yates served as a relief pitcher and closer for the Padres from 2017-2020. His best year came in 2019, when he made the first All-Star appearance of his career. He led the NL in saves that year with 41. He recorded a 1.19 ERA while striking out 101 batters. In 2020, Yates suffered an injury and played in just six games. In the offseason, he signed with the Toronto Blue Jays but underwent Tommy John surgery midway through the season without pitching for them.
