Mateo, Padres win close over Rockies 1-0

Mateo with the jets came up clutch in this one.

Jurickson Profar hit a deep double in the bottom of the ninth and Jorge Mateo was able to use his blazing speed to score from first to give the Padres a 1-0 nail-bitting victory over the Rockies on Monday night.

This game was quite the duel between two hot pitchers. Dinelson Lamet pitched seven innings and K’d 11 while the Rockies’ Kyle Freeland pitched six and struck out six. As of this moment, Lamet is 6th in the majors with 68 strikeouts and also sits at 8th with a 2.24 ERA.

On a night where hits were at a premium, Profar was the only Padre to record multiple hit, finishing 2-of-4 at the plate with the game-winning RBI. Fernando Tatis Jr, Wil Myers, Greg Garcia, and Trent Grisham all finished with a single hit.

In a bit of bad news, San Diego could be without Eric Hosmer for the next two to six weeks after he broke his finger on an unsuccessful bunting attempt in the first inning. Luckily for them, they’ve got rookie Jake Cornenworth and the newly-acquired Mitch Moreland to step in and fill that void at first base.

Game two of the series is once again scheduled for 6:10pm tonight at Petco Park. Mike Clevinger (0-1) is set to start his second game for the Padres as he’ll be facing right-hander Chi Chi Gonzalez (0-0).
