Trent Grisham was behind San Diego’s first two runs scored on the evening with the first coming on a wild pitch from Seattle starter Yusei Kikuchi that allowed Grisham to sprint through home in the top of the third inning. One inning later, Grisham grounded out into a fielder’s choice which brought home Tommy Pham in his first game back after injuring his hand late last month.
Machado broke the game open with his 15th home of the year just one batter later, which tied him with the team lead alongside Fernando Tatis Jr. This one was a three-run shot that pushed their lead to a comfortable five runs.
The Mariners finally got on the board in the eighth inning with a solo home run by 1B Evan White. The 24-year old finished 2-of-3 at the plate with a run scored and a strikeout.
Machado took the team lead in home runs with this 16th of the year in the final inning, notching the 16th time he’s gone yard in 2020. He’s now tied for third in the majors in that category while now sitting fifth in RBIs with 45.
