Chris Paddack gets the Opening Day start against he the D-back’s lefty Madison Bumgarner. This is Bumgarner’s first season with Arizona after spending the previous 11 years with the San Francisco Giants.
Paddack is one of four new starters on this team compared to last year’s opening day lineup. He joins CF Trent Grisham, RF Tommy Pham, and 2B Jurickson Profar.
ESPN has dubbed this game “the Cowboy Shootout” due in large part to Paddack being known by his teammates as “The Sherriff” and the little-known fact that Bumgarner moonlights on the rodeo circuit with the alias “Mason Saunders.”

The game is scheduled for 6:10pm PT this evening
San Diego came away with a 2-0 victory over the Giants in last season’s opening day but only won two of their previous nine openers prior to that. The Padres will look to win back-to-back season openers for the first time since 2006-2007, both of which were also against the Giants.
