In an abbreviated season, the potential outcomes are going to be much more varied. It’s not a normal season where it’s much easier to predict the final champion from a pool of about four or five contenders. With 60-games on the docket, any team that happens to get hot during this sprint to the postseason can make some serious noise.
Richard Justice, a writer for MLB.com, recently released an article detailing the top-five teams that he believes have the greatest shot at at “shocking the league” in 2020. The Padres happened to come in at number three on that list.
Here’s what Justice had to say about their placement on the list:
“A shortened season is perfect for a team loaded with young arms, because managing the workloads will be simpler. So the Padres can mix and match MacKenzie Gore, Luis Patiño and Adrian Morejon to a group that will welcome former Angels ace Garrett Richards, who is returning from Tommy John surgery. With the addition of Tommy Pham to the middle of the lineup and potentially a full season from Fernando Tatis Jr., the Padres could be both entertaining and competitive.”
Justice has the formula down pat in this one. Youthful arms, severely limited workloads, and exciting talent combined together will create some of the most-fun baseball to watch. If this thing is a sprint over the usual marathon, then you are not going to want to miss any of the action from this team.
