Now that the MLB season is over and we’ve entered the month of November, it’s time to settle into to awards season.
Later this evening, the Baseball Writer’s of America Association will announce their finalists for all of their awards tonight on the MLB Network around 6:00pm ET. The winners are scheduled to be announced on November 9 and 10.
Here’s the schedule for the announcements:
Nov. 9: Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year
Nov. 10: Manager of the Year
Nov. 11: Cy Young
Nov. 12: MVP.
The members of the Padres you should be keeping an eye on are manager Jayce Tingler and shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr.
Tingler helped the Padres to a 37-23 regular season record and their first postseason appearance in over 14 years. His top competition is obviously going to be Dave Roberts of the Dodgers (43-17) and Kevin Cash (40-20) of the Rays. Both won their respective leagues, so it’ll be tough to beat out either of them.
As for the MVP race in the National League, Tatis is right there in thick of it with the Dodgers’ Mookie Betts and the Braves’ Freddie Freeman.
Freeman led the NL in WAR at 3.4 and slashed .341/.462/.640 with 13 home runs while Betts went .292/.366/.562 with 16 homers. Tatis led the trio with 17 home runs but slashed just .277/.366/.571.
I’m not sure if Tatis can overcome his underwhelming September, but here’s to hoping the young star’s strong personality gives him a few extra points from the voters.
