Padres throttled by Cubs, 10-2

I believe they call this a “reality check”

MLB: Chicago Cubs at San Diego Padres Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

After a glorious walk-off against the Rockies on Sunday afternoon, the Chicago Cubs came to town and dispatched the Padres without much of a problem on Monday night at Petco Park.

Cal Quantrill got lit up for eight runs on 10 hits in just four-and-a-third innings, continuing an unfortunate tailspin that’s suddenly put a damper on what was otherwise an unexpected breakout season.

Nick Castellanos went yard in the first to go up 2-0, and a Kyle Schwarber bomb and Nico Hoerner triple in the fifth broke the game wide open.

Nick Martini continued to swing the bat well, adding three more hits, and Luis Urías picked up two knocks of his own, but that was about all there was to see offensively for the Friars.

If we’re looking for positives in an otherwise terribly forgetful game, Javy Guerra and Gerardo Reyes both tossed scoreless innings in relief.

The Pads and Cubbies will be back in action Tuesday night at 7:10 PM. Ronald Bolaños and José Quintana will get the ball for their respective clubs.
