Lamet throws stunner, Padres take the victory

Tatis Jr. gets his 20th HR of the year

MLB: Baltimore Orioles at San Diego Padres Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

On August 5, 2019 the Padres played the Seattle Mariners in the first of a short two game series. Coming off a brutal series against the Dodgers, the Padres needed a victory under their belt.

On the mound today was Dinelson Lamet, he gave up four walks in the first three innings. Lamet found his groove and in the 4th and was lights out from then on. The fans were on a “no hitter watch” into the 7th inning, when Lamet finally gave up Seattle’s first hit. Lamet’s night ended after a stellar 7 innings, giving up only two hits and recording 12 strikeouts. Adrian Morejon came in for the 8th and pitched himself into quite the mess. After striking out the first batter he faced, the Mariners took advantage of Morejon who gave up four hits before getting out of the inning. With a 5-run lead, Trey Wingenter came in to close out the game, stranding one base runner.

Offensively, the Padres bats came alive in the 5th inning, as everyone got involved. Hunter Renfroe scored off of a Manuel Margot double, immediately followed by a Luis Urias single that scored a rookie favorite, Josh Naylor. Manuel Marot scored off a sacrifice bunt by Austin Hedges, and to cap off the 5th inning, Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a two-run homer bringing in Urias. The Padres extended their lead to 8 after a one out two-run homer by Eric Hosmer, and Josh Naylor who decided to hit a home run of his own with two outs in the top of the 8th. In the top of the 9th with some aggressive base running, Tatis Jr. went from first to third on a wild pitch, then was driven in off an RBI single from Wil Myers.

Final score Padres 9-4
