Padres drop rubber match in extra innings

Yates continues to struggle against the Dodgers

The Padres went back to the bullpen game strategy Wednesday night against the Dodgers. Trey Wingenter took the mound hoping to win the series.

It wasn’t meant to be on this night.

An Eric Hosmer RBI single as well as a Hunter Renfroe Sac Fly gave the boys a 2-0 lead in the 1st. The Dodgers would strike right back, tagging Wingenter for 3 runs in the 2nd. Kentqa Maeda’s 2 run single did the damage before Wingenter yielded to Luis Perdomo.

It was all quiet on the Petco front until the 8th inning. Perdomo, Strahm and Baez combined for 5 shutout innings. Craig Stammen would give up an RBI single in the 8th to extend the Dodger lead to 4-2.

Eric Hosmer would homer in the bottom half to cut the lead back down to 4-3.

A bit of drama unfolded In the bottom of the 9th. Kenley Jansens wild pitch would allow Francisco Mejia to score. The Padres tied it and went to extras.

Unfortunately a Luis Urias throwing error (on a really great defensive play originally) would give the Dodgers the lead. AJ Pollock singled as well to make it 6-4.

Casey Sadler came in to shut the door for his 1st save.

The Padres are back at it Thursday night in San Francisco. The Giants have also begun to fade in the playoff race.
