Padres claim Nick Martini off waivers

The 29 year old joins a crowded outfield

MLB: Oakland Athletics at Chicago Cubs Quinn Harris-USA TODAY Sports

In what some might consider a surprise move, the Padres claimed Outfielder Nick Martini off waivers from the Oakland A’s.

After nearly 8 years in the minors, Martini finally made it to the big leagues last year. The guy can flat out hit righties, so it does give the team a left handed option off the bench. He could command some serious playing time if he hits well over the next month or so.

The 29 year old hit .296 last year while showing good plate discipline. In fact, he had a .397 OBP during his 1st stint. He struggled in limited time this year before being designated for assignment.

Side note- He’s also thrown 1 shutout inning in relief. If Ty France gets tired of pitching during blowout losses, it gives the team a solid left handed garbage time reliever.
