After looking human for a month and getting sent down for extra rest, questions surrounded Chris Paddack in some circles.
Who is the real Chris Paddack? Is he just another fast start rookie that got figured out? Or, is he the real deal and just in a small slump?
I think those questions have been answered.
Paddack blew through the vaunted Dodgers lineup with ease. Other than a bases loaded jam in the 5th, he didn’t have much resistance. He’s back.
The Padres would muster only 4 hits, but both were big. Hunter Renfroe went dead center on a hanging slider in the 7th for the 27th bomb on the year. Leading 1-0 in the 8th, Manuel Margot hit a 2 run shot off Maeda to give some extra cushion.
Craig Stammen would yield and unearned run in the 8th, but otherwise the bullpen was solid. The trio of Trey Wingenter, Craig Stammen and Kirby Yates slammed the door.
The win bring the boys back to a game under .500 and 2.5 out of the wild card race.
Worth noting
In 3 starts since his return from rest, Paddack has a 1.62 ERA.
Renfroe hit his career high 27th homer... It’s July.
Yates got his 29th save, on pace for a franchise record.
Padre pitching issues just 1 walk.
All 3 runs were scored with 2 outs.
Kenta Maeda has given up more home runs this year than he did in 2018. 14 vs 13.
