After being designated for assignment a few days ago, Jose Pirela has officially been traded for a bag of sunflower seeds and 2 sticks of gum.
Well, close enough.
The team will receive cash considerations from the Phillies in exchange for the utility man. His major league career has been remarkably mediocre since breaking in with the Yankees in 2014.
It’s too bad they don’t give out awards for being an excellent “in betweener”. Too good for AAA, but not good enough to stick on a big league roster. Pirela hit .353 with a .401 OBP in El Paso this year.
The soon to be 30 year old was never part of the long term plans given the plethora of top prospects the team has to protect and place on the 40 man roster.
His release/trade is an unfortunate side effect of organizational progress.
Good luck Mr. Pirela. Can’t wait to watch your playoff series clinching hit in the upcoming years.
