Padres win with timely hitting and excellent bullpen effort

Relievers combined for 5 shutout innings

MLB: San Diego Padres at New York Mets Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports

One thing we know is Dinelson Lamet is still Dinelson Lamet. The 26 year old has some of the best stuff in the game. On Wednesday night he looked like 2 different pitchers. At times, simply dominant and untouchable. Other times, he’s wild misses and his spots consistently.

Lamet got touched for a run in the 1st and the 3rd. He gave up 2 ER and threw 80 pitches over 4 innings. He exited with a 4-2 lead and ultimately left feeling positive about his outing. In fact, his similarities to Noah Syndergaard were striking.

Early on, Syndergaard was all over the place. He had 4 walks in the first 3 innings. An Austin Hedges 2 out RBI single got the scoring started in the 2nd. An Eric Hosmer sac fly added a run in the 3rd. Later in the inning, Hunter Renfroe and Franmil Reyes came through with 2 out RBI. The Padres held a 4-2.

Suddenly, the other Syndergaard showed up. He looked dominant over the next 4 innings. His final line was 7 IP 8 H 4 R (3 ER) 5 Walks and 8 K’s. Seems pedestrian, but there were flashes of brilliance.

Strahm, Stammen, Munoz and Perdomo would combine for 5 shutout innings out of the bullpen, one of their better combined outings of late. The boys would add 3 insurance runs in the 8th and 9th.

Their 7-2 win gives them a chance to win the series Thursday afternoon before heading home to face the red hot Giants.
