Manny Machado had gone 71 plate appearances without a home run before coming up with the bases loaded in the 6th inning last night. As it happens, he sent one into the night sky and gave the Padres an 8-1 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
“It felt good to finally barrel one up”, Machado said.
Indeed it felt good for all Padre fans. The team bounced back with an 8-2 win after 2 tough losses to the Marlins.
Franmil Reyes went deep again in the 5th inning. It went as high as it did far. His moonshot tied him with Hunter Renfroe for a team leading 17 home runs. Their combined 34 long balls are more than any other teammates in the Major Leagues except for Cody Bellinger and Joc Pederson of the Dodgers.
Eric Lauer continued his impressive run of quality starts. He gave up just 2 hits and 1 ER in 6 innings of work. He’s lowered his ERA from 5.75 on May 10th to 4.18. He’s given up just 4 ER in 24 innings during that time frame while showing exactly why the team made him their opening day starter.
In the Harper vs. Machado battle (if that’s really a thing) round 1 goes to Machado. Harper went 0-4 and extended his Major League leading strikeout count to 78.
The boys are back at it tonight as they give the ball to Chris Paddack against Jerad Eickhoff. Game time is 7:10 PT
