Tatis and Hosmer power Padres to win over Cardinals

Back to back bombs in the 6th was the difference in the game

MLB: St. Louis Cardinals at San Diego Padres Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

If you told Eric Lauer that he’d throw 98 pitches and the team would win 3-1, he’d assume he went 7 strong innings.

Not last night.

Lauer worked in and out of trouble, going 4 innings and giving up 1 ER. The bullpen came through with one of its best nights all year. Everything clicked.

The Cardinals scored their only run on a scratch single by Michael Wacha in the 4th. The Padres challenged the play but lost.

Fernando Tatis Jr and Eric Hosmer went back to back in the 6th to provide all the spark the team would need. In addition to hitting his 10th HR Tatis Jr stole his 12th base.

Kirby Yates got the final 4 outs for his 27th save.

Worth noting

•The Padres struck out just 3 times, their lowest total all year

•Announced attendance was 33,329

•Tatis Jr continued his torrid June, hitting .366 with 4 HR and 13 RBI

Luis Perdomo has gone 13 13 innings without an earned run over his last 9 outings

Hosmer’s 2 RBI got him to 57 on the year, on pace for 114. He’s also 9th in the NL

•At the halfway mark, the team is 1 game over .500 and 1.5 games out of the wild card
