WHY: Largely thanks to the continued struggles of their bullpen, the Padres dropped their second straight game to the Pirates yesterday. This morning, they will turn to Joey Lucchesi as they try to steal a win in game 3 of the series. The veteran lefty put up zeroes across 7 innings his last time out against the Milwaukee Brewers and the bullpen could really use another long start.
Manny Machado went 2 for 5 with a home run in yesterday’s loss as he continued what has been a strong run of play in June. Unfortunately, the only other starting position player to really contribute at the plate was Josh Naylor who went hitless but reached base three times via the base on balls. They’ll need more from the rest of the lineup today.
