Lauer sharp, Padres offense stymied in loss

Lauer’s most effective outing wasted

MLB: San Diego Padres at Pittsburgh Pirates Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Manny Machado giveth, Manny Machado taketh away.

That was the theme for the Padres on Friday night in Pittsburgh.

Manny Machado was the story in the 2-1 loss to the Pirates. His 4th inning home run was the only run the Padres would muster all night.

In the 7th, his throwing error would lead to the decisive 2nd run, giving the Pirates the only baserunner they’d need to take and hold the lead. Jung Ho Kang scored on a Jose Osuna single to make it 2-1.

The Padres weren’t without their chances, though. They loaded the bases in the 8th but were unable to break through. Franmil Reyes popped out after Machado and Renfroe earned back to back walks. They were 0-6 with RISP on the night.

Eric Lauer threw 7 innings giving up just 5 hits and 1 ER in a wasted outing.

The boys are back at it Saturday afternoon as Chris Paddack makes his return to the mound at 1:05 PT.
