The Padres signed Manny Machado and the fans did some CELEBRATING

In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past 24 hours, here’s some exciting news for you: Manny Machado is going to be a San Diego Padre. Yes, it’s true, one of the most highly-sought-after free agents of this offseason will be playing his home games at Petco Park in 2019. Naturally, Padres fans are ecstatic about this news. And they spent all day yesterday (and likely will spend the next several months and maybe years) celebrating this moment in Padres history.

A large chunk of the celebrations involved alcohol in some form. While some imbibed various quantities of their favorite spirits, poured themselves a glass of wine, or hit up their favorite breweries, the biggest wave of celebratory drinking gave way to what is now a country-wide trend: the #PadresShotgun.

Several Padres fans gathered at Alesmith Brewery

Several Padres fans made their way to Alesmith Brewery for an impromptu Machado party.

And, of course, a slew of Padres-centric podcast episodes emerged to discuss the Padres’ signing and what it means for the team.

But some of my absolute favorite Machado reactions of the day came from Padres camp out in Peoria.

Now this is only a small fraction of what people posted on social media yesterday and this morning, but it does a good job of showing what a huge deal this has been. For such a long time, Padres fans have begged the ownership to spend money, and they finally showed that they are willing to do so. Regardless of one’s opinion about Machado, there is no denying that he is a serious talent and can help the Padres succeed on the field. And it’s just really fun to have something for all of us to celebrate together, whether it’s shotgunning a beer or eating a couple of spoonfuls of mayonnaise or just getting together with other Padres fans and feeding off each other’s energy. This should be a fun season.
