MANNY MACHADO WILL BE A PADRE

The Padres have agreed to terms with perennial All-Star third baseman / shortstop Manny Machado

PADRES FANS, BUCKLE UP!! We’ve been on the edge of our seat for a while now, but it sounds like this is actually happening. A report has come from a legitimate source that the Padres have agreed to terms with Manny Machado:

Ken Rosenthal followed quickly with some rough terms for the deal:

We know that Fernando Tatis Jr. has always idolized Machado. We know that they share the same agent. Now we can look ahead and envision those two studs manning the left side of the Padres infield for the next five years or more. With Luis Urias at second base and Eric Hosmer at first, this is will soon be one of the most formidable infields in the game, and all of those players will be with the team for a long time. Talk about a foundation!

While I wait for my heartrate to come back to earth, here’s some random thoughts falling out of my head:

  • Roughly $30M/year is a crapload of money, but it’s not crippling. According to Baseball-Reference’s projections, that amount would only push the team’s payroll above league average in 2022 with the current commitments plus arbitration projections. The pay won’t be a flat distribution, so it’ll be interesting to see how the money is spread across the years.
  • Expect to see a large chunk of this contract to be distributed as “signing bonus” money. Bonuses aren’t taxable income for Machado as a Florida resident, while his income will be heavily taxed since he’ll be working in California, the state with the highest income taxes by far in the nation.
  • Jose Pirela, pack your bags. Ian Kinsler is now a backup utility infielder along with Greg Garcia. The outfield is jam-packed. If Pirela wasn’t an extra piece already, he certainly is now.
  • I feel bad for Ty France. He came into camp with a strong shot of making the team one way or another. Now with Machado on board, he’ll be headed back to El Paso and should only see MLB time in the event of injury to Machado or Hosmer. Ty’s a good guy and he’s the last Padre player with a direct link to Tony Gwynn, who he played for at San Diego State.
