The Padres announced a package on moves on Monday, including the outright of Seth Mejias-Brean and Carl Edwards Jr and the designation of both Jacob Nix and Eric Yardley.
We all know about the 40-man roster crunch falling on front office shoulders this offseason, and these moves are mostly about paring down the roster accordingly.
Mejias-Brean is an older “non-prospect” player who actually performed pretty well across two levels last year, even earning his first cup of coffee. Unfortunately, there isn’t much need in the org for a third baseman.
Edwards Jr., you might recall, was acquired for Brad Wieck this trade deadline. Wieck actually looked solid for the Cubs, so this move will likely add one more small pockmark on the inconsistent trading record of AJ Preller. Edwards Jr. has already elected free agency, but it is unclear if Mejias-Brean will choose to remain with Triple-A El Paso.
Nix was once a promising young system arm, but, well...
Yardley for his part, seemed to have the tools to be a decent reliever, and will presumably be claimed by another org.
Thank you for your service, lads!
