Per reports, Jayce Tingler has added three new coaches to his staff.
Bobby Dickerson will serve as the bench coach. Dickerson was the infield coach for the Phillies last season. Before that, he was the third base coach for the Orioles.
Wayne Kirby will serve as the first base coach. Kirby was the first base and outfield coach for the Orioles from 2011 through 2018.
Ryan Flaherty will serve as the quality control coach. According to National Post, a quality control coach is an advance planner who tries to ensure quality output with quality input. That appears to involve helping players prepare for games and addresses the need for front offices to have the work of their burgeoning analytics departments implemented properly by the players and coaches. This is Flaherty’s first job as a coach. Prior to being hired by the Padres, Flaherty played for the Orioles, Braves, and Indians.
All three coaches were apart of the Orioles around the same time. Padres star third basemen Manny Machado played in Baltimore at that time as well. Dickerson and Kirby coached Machado and Flaherty was his teammate. All four were apart of three playoff seasons in Baltimore. There should be some good chemistry in San Diego between the coaches.
