On the latest episode of Make the Padres Great Again, Craig Elsten and myself reacted to the news that the San Diego Padres have hired Jayce Tingler to be the next manager of the team.
While we thought this managerial search might be different, seeing as how the team has young star players and is looking to compete (also because Ron Fowler said, publicly, that experience would play a big role here), this marks the 6th straight managerial hire by the Padres that has no prior MLB managerial experience. Delightful!
Anyway, it’s not all bad. There’s plenty to like about Tingler and even something to like about giving A.J. Preller complete control over this hire, but I think the Padres really need to get some control of Ron Fowler.
If Ron’s going to promise things publicly that continue to be the opposite of what actually happens, then we have no choice but to assume he’s either powerless or lying. Neither is a great look for someone that is the de facto spokesperson of a team that is desperately trying to win back fans that haven’t seen a playoff win since before the iPhone was invented.
