You get the picture.
Reports indicate that AJ Preller’s search for the Padres’ 16th full-fledged manager has dwindled down to two candidates, with Braves third base coach Ron Washington and Rangers coach Jayce Tingler outlasting a field that also included Rod Barajas and Brad Ausmus.
While Kevin Acee recently hinted that it’s still plausible that an as-yet-unknown candidate could enter the hiring fray, the likelihood is that San Diego will be managed in 2020 by one of these two men. Both have lasting ties with Preller dating back to their shared times in Texas.
So, who’ve you got? The grizzled Wash, who led the Rangers to two World Series appearances before off-field issues seemed to undercut his job security, or the supposedly analytically inclined Tingler, who carries both dugout and front office experience?
