Back in Brown: 2020

Executive Chairman Ron Fowler admits to brown making a comeback in 2020.

The Padres fanverse exploded in delight across social media channels yesterday with the publishing of a Nick Canepa/Ron Fowler interview detailing that the chorus of change has all but sealed the color’s return for the 2020 season.

While the piece reads like a Statler and Waldorf take on the idea of brown uniforms (with Canepa quips like “didn’t look like a chili size” and “looking like UPS drivers who just rear-ended a French’s truck”) within the interview Ron Fowler comments that he’s resigned to the idea of brown coming back to the Padres’ colorway.

Fowler via Canepa:

“If I were a betting man, I’d say we’re in brown uniforms in 2020. We’re still in the middle of research, but that’s what I believe.”

“It’s what the fans want. The reality is we want people to be passionate about the team and they are passionate about brown. The last alternative is blue.”

The overtures regarding bringing back the brown to the Padres seem to have finally reached the ears of ownership. What should fans look to expect with the return of the brown?

Fowler via Canepa once again:

“Dark brown, with gold — and a lot of white, is what we’re looking at.”

Tons of mockups and designs have made their way across Twitter and social media since the sand era and after the excellent 2016 uniform season led to the current 2017-18 set. This writer and one Tony Losoya even took a swing at a jersey redesign and this take on a home jersey could be considered a reasonable approximation of the above Fowler quote:

It’s also notable that a larger uniform change will also arrive in 2020. Longtime uniform supplier Majestic will no longer retain the rights to the MLB contract. Under Armor was first announced to have seized the rights to MLB uniforms but has since backed away due to financial pressure. While yet to be officially announced, it seems certain that Nike will become the official uniform supplier in 2020. Hats will remain untouched; New Era will continue to supply the official soon-to-be-brown on-field headwear for the foreseeable future.

Are you as excited about the return of brown as I am?
