Three and a half hours, seven Padres pitchers, and five Giants runs later the Friars would end up giving up their second game of the final 2018 series in San Francisco. Robbie Erlin was fantastic, the Padres bats were fine, but a less-than-ideal 7th inning and some extra-inning pinch hitting heroics from... Madison Bumgarner, spelled L for the Pads.
Erlin did fine for his 5 innings pitched, giving up only 4 hits and 2 runs, 1 earned (a solo HR in the fifth inning.) In fact, the Giants only tallied 9 hits to the Padres’ 12 for the night. Castillo, Strahm, Stammen, and Wingenter would all provide scoreless, hitless outings. A two-run RBI-double conceded by Robert Stock in the seventh gave the Giants the go ahead.
For the Pads, Eric Hosmer had a two-run RBI single to center, bringing home Erlin and Wil Myers and getting Franmil Reyes to third after a bobble in center field. Hunter Renfroe would bring Reyes home after bopping one hard enough for second baseman Abiatal Avelino to deflect it into center for another Padres Run. Reyes would end up tying things 4-4 with an RBI single of his own.
All for naught, though. Since Bochy had the brilliant idea of pinch hitting Bumgarner in the 12th. Bum would hit, arguably, a ground ball missile to Myers at third, who was playing in on the grass for the potential play at the plate with a runner on third. Myers would olé that grounder, letting the run score beyond easily.
A tough walkoff loss on the tail end of a 3 hit night for Franmil, a 4 hit night for Freddy Galvis, and a bipolar bullpen. The Padres get some shot at taking the series tomorrow night with Luis Perdomo facing off against Casey Kelly.
