Padres Preview: 08/22 @ Rockies

Jacob Nix’ first two Major League starts couldn’t have been more different from one another. Tonight he’ll try to move forward from his last outing and lead the Padres to another win in Colorado.

Nix’ MLB debut was comprised of six scoreless innings against the Phillies. He only gave up four hits, allowed two walks, and struck out four batters. But six days later against the Diamondbacks he failed to even make it out of the first inning, allowing five earned runs while only making two outs. Obviously he’ll need to do much better than that tonight as he faces what may be his toughest test so far: the Rockies at Coors Field.

Last night the Rockies were kept in check by Robbie Erlin and the Padres bullpen. But we all know how tough it can be for a visiting pitcher at Coors Field, especially an inexperienced rookie. Plus the Rockies have Jon Gray heading to the hill tonight in game 2, and he’s been something of a good luck charm for them lately. They’ve won each of his last eight starts dating back to June 22nd.

However, Gray had a rough go of things against the Padres earlier this season at Coors Field. He gave up seven earned runs on ten hits (both season highs) through five innings of work back in April.
