Padres 3, Giants 5: Friars get Gorked in extras

MLB: San Francisco Giants at San Diego Padres Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

The Giants are in town for a couple of games before the Padres hit the road again. They dropped their first game, though, and it took ‘em about 4 hours to do it.

Eric Lauer had one of his okay-est games of the season, putting in 5 innings but giving up a 3-run home run in the second inning to Chase d’Arnaud, keeping the Giants in the lead until after he would exit the game and the Padres would put 3 more on the board.

Jose Castillo, Craig Stammen, and Kirby Yates all threw scoreless innings keeping the Pads in the game at 3-3 until the 9th. The Padres would score in the fourth inning with a solo HR from Hunter Renfroe, a sac fly from Manuel Margot in the fifth, and a Christian Villanueva RBI-double in the 8th.

The Giants kept the Friars subdued to 3 runs which set them up for a triumphant 12th inning when Gorkys Hernandez would take Matt Strahm yard putting them up 4-3. Buster Posey would drive in another run making things 5-3, and Will Smith would come in at the bottom of the inning to strike out Margot, Wil Myers, and Renfroe in order.

The Padres get another shot at the Giants and a chance to split the 2-game series before the end of the month tomorrow, with Clayton Richard taking on Dereck Rodriguez.
