Padres 4, Mets 6: Richard gets lit up, Friars can’t catch up

MLB: San Diego Padres at New York Mets Andy Marlin-USA TODAY Sports

The Padres drop the final game of the series against the Mets, closing out their July on the road before finishing out the month at home. Looking back the past month on the road the Friars didn’t win a single series and only managed to split a single 4-game series against the D-Backs.

Today’s loss came on the tail end of a bad Clayton Richard start. He pitched 5 innings and gave up 5 hits, but also gave up 6 earned runs, two of those runs on a two-run HR to Joey Bats. Richard also only recorded one strikeout and walked two.

Phil Maton, Matt Strahm, and Craig Stammen all provided 1 inning a piece of scoreless baseball, but the Friars lineup provided 6 innings of scoreless baseball. The only runs came from an RBI from Freddy Galvis in the top of the second, an (overturned) Austin Hedges solo HR in the top of the 5th and a two-run shot from Galvis in the 7th.

The Pads will get a break on Thursday and return to Petco Park to face the D-Backs on Friday.
