Jordan Lyles will start game 2 of the series tonight.

The Padres broke out a rash of runs last night in a 11-4 pummeling of the visiting Atlanta Braves. We’ll see if the boys wasted all their runs in tonight’s action featuring Jordan Lyles on the bump.

Lyles (2-1, 3.65 ERA) has been a pleasant surprise returning to starting duty. Despite a couple hiccups, Lyles has been relatively solid in a Padres starting rotation now featuring bullpen days (one of those is coming tomorrow). In his last game against Miami Lyles went 7 innings of 2-run ball with 7 strikeouts. Jordan has gone at least 5 innings in 5 of his 6 games as starter and will be facing a Braves team he has had some success against. In 2 starts and 3 total appearances against Atlanta Lyles carries a 2.84 ERA. He’ll be facing off against one of the top pitchers currently in the National League.

Sean Newcomb (6-1, 2.73 ERA) is riding a red-hot May (5-0, 1.54 ERA) into Petco Park and is looking to add another win to his current 6 game winning streak. The 24-year-old is tied for 5th in wins in the National League and his ERA ranks 10th. In his last game against NL East rival Washington the lefty turned in a 7 inning 2 hit performance which led to a win. Last night’s loss, however, dampened the Braves lead in the East to a single game over the Nationals. The last time Newcomb faced the Padres (almost a year ago) he held the Friars scoreless on 6 hits with only 1 walk and 8 strikeouts. The only Achilles heel for the Braves starter is walks: he’s allowed 30 in 67 innings pitched, good for 4th best (worst?) in the Senior Circuit.

Tonight’s game starts at 7:10 PM.
