The Padres did enough to come back for a win last night and Clayton Richard will try to keep his pitcher winning streak alive in this afternoon’s interleague finale against the Texas Rangers.
Richard (7-6, 4.23 ERA) has been steady and consistently pretty good, if by that you mean the Padres turn up the offense every time he’s on the mound. But I digress; Richard has only allowed 3 earned runs or less during his current 4 game pitcher winning streak and has gone at least 6 innings in each game, stretching to 7 in 2 of those games. With a bullpen that has experienced a heavier workload, a vintage Clayton Richard performance would be most welcome going into the off day. The veteran lefty will be facing another veteran lefty in Mike Minor.
Minor (5-4, 5.06 ERA) is not carrying a winning streak into tonight’s game but has been improved in his last few starts, going 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA in his last three games. The 30-year-old got the win in his last appearance against the Twins, giving up only 1 run on 3 hits over 6 frames. Mike hasn’t faced the Padres since 2014 and holds a career 1-3 5.55 ERA facing San Diego. Most of Padres Twitter is expecting a feast for Hunter Renfroe and Christian Villanueva; Minor carries a .272 BA against righties.
The finale is one more after work special at 5:05 PM.
