Padres Preview: 06/15 @ Braves

Clayton Richard will get the ball for game 2.

MLB: San Diego Padres at Atlanta Braves Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

With a loss last night and another series opener loss the Padres have to bounce back tonight, right? They’ll try it again in Atlanta with Clayton Richard on the hill.

Richard (5-6, 4.40 ERA) had a fantastic outing in his last game, taking a no-hitter into the 7th inning against the hapless Marlins. In his last 3 games Richard has given the bullpen a rest by carrying the pitching load into 7 innings and is coming into tonight’s game on a 2-game pitcher win streak. While Clayton may not be the best pitcher in the Padres rotation he is doing his part in eating innings; he’s 3rd in the NL in innings pitched (88 IP). Clayton will have to overcome pitching in Atlanta to get the win tonight. The veteran lefty carries a 0-5 7.52 ERA record when on the road facing the Braves.

Julio Teheran’s spot was due up tonight, though the righty is slated to come off the DL on Sunday after sustaining an injury while facing these same Padres back on June 4th. Brandon McCarthy (5-3, 5.03 ERA) will take his place tonight. McCarthy started the season off well but was batted around in May and is coming into tonight’s game trying to bounce back from a 4 earned run 4 23 inning clunker against his former Dodgers club. Both pitchers facing off tonight are similar in their seasons so far: stellar performances sandwiched between clunkers.

Great news was announced today: Ted Leitner is cancer free and ready to return to the radio waves for our Padres.

This afternoon’s game starts up at 4:35 PM.
