A drubbing against the Cardinals yesterday will bring about the much vaunted bullpen day for the Padres in game 2 against the Cardinals.
The “start” today will be taken again by Matt Strahm (1-2, 3.07 ERA). In a starting role Matt has pitched an inning or two and for the most part has been effective: he’s only allowed one run and one hit in his last 4 appearances (6 1⁄3 innings). The usage of Strahm in the beginning of games may be a preemptive move to get the lefty stretched out to a starter role in the future. Expect to see the usual suspects also make an appearance today including Adam Cimber and Craig Stammen, depending on how the game fares for the Friars.
Facing San Diego is a former Padre minor leaguer in Miles Mikolas (7-1, 2.27 ERA). Mikolas has been one of the best pitchers for an already good Cardinals rotation; he’s 4th in the National League in ERA and 3rd in wins while boasting a 58:9 K:BB ratio. In his last game action Mikolas tossed 7 innings of 3-hit ball with only one walk and one unearned run allowed. Miles has already had one good game against his former club back in May at Petco Park, getting the 2-1 victory after 6 2⁄3 innings of one run ball on 5 hits.
The Padres will have to bounce back tonight to keep their series streak alive. Tonight’s game starts at 5:15 PM.
