The Padres offense were locked down while the Cards beat up on Jordan Lyles a little bit. The loss comes at the first of a three game series in St. Louis.
Lyles was tagged in the second and fourth innings, sticking in for a full 6 but giving up double-digit hits. The Cards racked up 11 hits and 4 earned runs, two of them 2-run home runs. Despite the 11 hits, and despite the two home runs, the Cards were kept to 4 runs by Lyles. However, none other than Jedd Gyorko would come through in the 8th to pop a solo home run against Phil Hughes.
The only Padres runs came in the top of the second on a solo Cory Spangenberg home run, his sixth of the season, and a Hunter Renfroe RBI ground-out, scoring Travis Jankowski. The Friars could only scrap together 4 hits, and were closed out for a 5-2 loss.
Matt Strahm will lead the Padres into round two tomorrow at 5:15 PM PST.
