A Memorial Day opening series loss will have the Padres send Tyson Ross to right the ship against the visiting Miami Marlins of Florida.
Ross (4-3 3.13 ERA) has been nothing short of reliable for the Padres and their beleaguered starting rotation. Given Tyson’s performance so far this season it isn’t much of a surprise to see the righty’s name popping up on trade lists as July draws nearer. The Padres should go into tonight’s game with some confidence: Tyson is 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA in games he starts at Petco Park and has a 2.93 ERA for the month of May. Ross will face off against an equally successful Dan Straily.
Straily (2-0, 3.12 ERA) has had a good season so far for a Marlins franchise desperate to tear itself apart and rebuild in the image of Derek Jeter or something similar. The Florida Miami Marlins have gone on to win in every Dan Straily performance so far this season. In his last 4 starts Dan has allowed 2 runs or less but has suffered from allowing too many free passes (17 walks against 19 hits. You might remember Straily’s effort last season where he struck out 14 Friars without nary a walk in 7 innings. Overall Straily was 0-0 with a 2.77 ERA facing San Diego last year. Shortstop Freddy Galvis has seen the most of Straily and has a .278 batting average against to show for it (5 for 18).
Tonight’s contest starts up at 7:10 PM. Thoughts go out to our own Ted Leitner, who has hit the Friar Faithful with some tough news:
Have always tried to be honest with the radio & TV audience. So will do that now also: I have cancer-and will be off the #Padres broadcast indefinitely after Wednesday’s game. Thank you Padres fans and #aztecfamily for all your support all these wonderful years.
