Padres Preview 05/23 @ Nationals

Tyson Ross will try to keep the Padres from being swept in Washington.

A walk-off loss has put the Padres in danger of being swept out of Washington. The Friars will have to hope Tyson Ross can keep the Nats’ bats at bay in order to salvage a win.

Ross (3-3, 3.35 ERA) had a good enough start to get the win in his last action against the Pirates, going 6 innings and only giving up 2 runs on 5 hits with 4 walks. Tyson will look to turn his luck around against these Washington hitters; in his last appearance against the Nationals in Petco Park the veteran righty surrendered 5 runs on 6 hits in 6 innings in an eventual loss.

The Nationals had some intrigue to their starting pitcher matchup thanks to some rain issues but have decided to run out Erick Fedde, who will be making his 2018 season debut. Fun Fact: the Padres actually drafted Fedde in the 24th round of the 2011 draft only to have the righty decline and opt for college ball. He would eventually be drafted by the Nationals 3 years later in the 1st round. In 3 starts last year Fedde gave up 16 earned runs on 25 hits over 15 13 innings (3 starts), giving him an inflated 9.39 ERA for his very brief 2017 campaign. So far at AAA Syracuse Erick has a 1-1 record with a 4.35 ERA in 8 starts. The UNLV product and top Nationals pitching prospect sports an improving fastball and slider combo the team hopes will translate better this year despite his numbers being pedestrian.
