After losing a slugfest yesterday the Padres will try to split the two game set this afternoon with former Colorado Rockies starter Jordan Lyles taking the hill for the good guys.
Hold on to your hats, but dare I say that Lyles (0-1, 3.28 ERA) has been serviceable coming out of the pen? I do dare. Jordan has been effective coming out of the bullpen in mop-up duty for the Padres this season and has been pressed back into starting duties thanks to the foibles of one Bryan Mitchell. In his last start Lyles went 5 innings and only gave up 1 earned run against the Cardinals. In his limited action in the bullpen there’s only been one real black mark against Lyles; that was the 4 run mess against the Mets back in April though Jordan has really only seen action in losing efforts. The righty will face off against German Marquez.

You might remember Marquez (2-4, 5.35 ERA) from his first start, which was the brawl in Colorado where German was tossed for jumping into the fray while in the midst of a shutout 3 inning performance. Though the 33-year-old righty is suffering from extreme home/away splits (10.34 ERA at Coors, 1.96 ERA on the road) he hasn’t been great against the Padres in Petco. German is 1-1 with a 8.03 ERA in the beautiful confines of Petco. The Padres will have a prime chance to tee off and get the split today before taking the day off tomorrow to travel to Pittsburgh.
