The Colorado Rockies took the first game of the short 2-game homestand. They did it with a bunch of home runs and an airtight bullpen.
Joey Lucchesi had a fair start today, only really giving up 3 runs over 5 innings. Unfortunately, 2 of the 3 home runs from the Rocks today came off Joey in the top of the 5th. He finished his start with only 2 strikeouts and a walk. Kazuhisa Makita didn’t have much better luck, also giving up 3 earned runs and a homer.
The Padres offense couldn’t catch up to the 6 runs over 6 innings from the Rockies, and ended up sprinkling 4 runs from the 3rd through 6th inning, scoring one a piece.
In the 3rd inning, Manuel Margot knocked an RBI single. In the 4th, Franmil Reyes reached base on an errant throw from Trevor Story, allowing fellow fran Franchy Cordero to score. Reyes ended up going 0-for-4 with 2 strikeouts. In the 5th, Eric Hosmer hit his 13th double of the season for an RBI, then A.J. Ellis knocked home a run on an RBI-single.
The Padres had chances in the 7th and 9th innings to claw their way to a tie or walkoff, but couldn’t seal the deal. They drop the first half of the series and will finish things up in the day tomorrow.
